Beyond the Traditional Teaching-Learning towards the Mutual Interaction!

Fruitful interaction between the learners and the teacher has been one of the main focus of any English as a Second Language classroom. According to Allright (1984), in order for students to achieve a high level of communicative competence, classroom instruction has "heavily relied on the significance of interaction of live; person to person encounters". Having a fruitful interaction among the learners and the teacher will eventually make the learners more involved with the process of language learning while giving the opportunity for the teacher to observe and supervise the learners to get the best out of learning process. So
, what are the strategies that can be implemented to have increased interaction between the learners and the teacher?

  • Classroom Diversity and Inclusion
First of all, all the students should be included in the teaching process. It is the teacher's responsibility to make students feel that they are included and belong to the class! (In fact we all love some sort of closeness!) Moreover, showing the interest in interacting with the students will make them feel some sort of a closeness to the teacher.. After all, it is a fact that when the learner feels close to the teacher, he/she will start to like the subject and automatically will be encouraged to learn.
  • Accommodating Different Learning Styles and Promoting Collaboration Among Students.
We all have different learning styles in which we best learn. So, it is the teacher's responsibility to incorporate various methods of teaching in order for all the students to interact equally with the teacher. Instead of just teaching and giving a note; the teacher can visual materials and start a discussion with the class. That way, the students will come out with their ideas and a fruitful language communication will be created. Every classroom has 'let me try' type of students (kinesthetic learners). In order to interact successfully with this sort of students, the teacher can use role play or dramatize concepts, or else asking them to envision a scene and then discuss about it can too be utilized.

  • Increasing Student Talk Time
Both the teacher and the learners should actively participate in ESL classroom. When the student talktime is increased, it makes the learner interact more with the teacher. In the context where the students' native language is not English and it is only a second language, it is the teacher's responsibility to make an environment where they could speak and interact with others by using English language.
  • Creating Enjoyable Teaching-Learning Environment
We all love to have some fun.. isn't it? It is no exception for the teaching-learning process. Inco-operating games is an incredible way to add an instant fun to any language class! It won't need a lot of time to prepare. In fact, it will make the students eagerly wait until the next ESL period. At the sametime, it will make students more interactive with the teacher as well!

Do you think that you can host an interactive classroom with the above mentioned strategies? Just comment below if you have any more strategies that could be helpful for the ESL teachers to make their teaching more interactive.

  3. Hi Wishmi. Interesting post. In your article, you have presented many strategies for improving interaction. I too agree with you about using different ways to incorporate different learning styles. I would like to share some strategies I personally believe which help to create an interactive learning classroom. The best way to get the student to a talk is to use questions that stimulate a response, discussion, and a hands-on experience. Students would love to talk about their experiences. Additionally, use brainstorming activities about the topic which you are going to teach. By breaking down a lesson into separate chunks, for each chunk, you can easily use various interactive activities

Role of a Teacher - I

Role of a Teacher Last Monday, I had a very nice discussion with one of my colleagues about the role of a teacher. This conversation inspired me to write about my personal opinion on the subject. Teacher/Lecturer From a pragmatic perspective, the word "teacher" typically refers to someone who educates school-aged learners, whereas "lecturer" denotes a person who delivers specialized content to undergraduates. However, both these referential nouns can be broadly identified as educators (using educators as an umbrella term that includes teachers, lecturers, and others in similar roles). It is commonly understood that an educator's role is to educate or teach. But is that their main role? As a practitioner in the field, I believe, the role of a teacher is to create an environment where students feel motivated and engaged in the learning process. This enables students to develop a genuine desire to learn. The responsibility of an educator goes far beyond simply deli...

English Language Speaking Anxiety Among Sri Lankan Student s According to the Constitution of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, Sinhala and Tamil are designated as the National Languages of the country, while English serves as the link language (Constitution of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka - Chapter IV - Language, n.d.) . Furthermore, the Constitution affirms that “a person shall be entitled to be educated through the medium of either of the National Languages: Provided that the provisions of this paragraph shall not apply to an institution of higher education where the medium of instruction is a language other than a National Language.” This provision ensures linguistic inclusivity in state-funded higher education while offering flexibility for universities to provide courses in multiple languages.
